Lance . Ballpoint . October 16, 2007
It was a good rule – to always leave first. It avoided the awkwardness and the looks. Flattened hopes and preempted dismissals. It also neatly sidestepped intimacy on any meaningful level.

Or you could pretend it was just about the courtesy of letting them sleep. It really just depended on your state of denial.

Lance wasn’t that far gone, himself. He was saving himself, not them. He knew that. He also almost knew, but wouldn’t quite admit, that the good rule – to always leave first – wasn’t the best rule. No, the best rule was very likely ‘no more one night stands.’
