This was Tamara's entry in mine and Cara's "Lance and Maggie" contest.
The general idea lupin was touching on had to do with how both of them were afraid to commit, and afraid to settle down... rely on one person for everything they need... so they settled on an open relationship. Neither were especially interested in other people, but they exercised their rights within the relationship just to keep up appearances even though both would've been happier simply being exclusively together.
